Chelsea managed to go top of the table after a convincing 3-0 win over Newcastle United, which made it 10 matches without defeat for the blues. This includes matches against the likes of Manchester city at the Etihad stadium, where they were expected to struggle.
Eden Hazard scored a hat-trick to remind everyone of his qualities. Despite this impressive result, Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho continued to downplay Chelsea’s chances of winning the title after saying that he is looking only at the fifth place battle tomorrow.
Tottenham and Manchester United, who are now considered as contenders for the fifth spot, play against Everton and Fulham respectively. Mourinho says that this is a far more important match for him since he wants to make sure that Chelsea reach the group stages of the Champions league. Only the top three qualify for this competition automatically.
Only recently, he told the man utd transfer news website that Arsenal and Manchester City were the proper title contenders before the match against city. Chelsea became the first team to beat Manuel Pellegrini’s men at their home ground this campaign.
Yet, Mourinho has been continually insisting that Chelsea can be considered as title challengers only from next season onwards since he is still building the team. Chelsea were the highest spenders in January after splashing out £ 45 million to improve the team.
“I know today we are top of the league but I look to fifth place. When we are far from fifth and have a Champions League position under control, then it will be time to look at Arsenal, Manchester City and Liverpool and see where they are and see the distances. I want to stop with that story of the horses but I don’t change my idea. Manchester City is a Jaguar. You cannot put an L plate behind a Jaguar,” said Jose Mourinho.
